El noi de la mare Mama's child in Catalan struck me deeply the first time I heard it in I was attending Segovia masterclasses at USC Los Angeles and the song was the opening music of the Segovia films we watched between masterclasses. Many of the guitarists present had never heard the piece until then and I know that many sought the music in order to learn and play it. The tuning in D makes the whole instrument vibrate generously and Llobet's deep understanding of the guitar is the vehicle that makes the music flow smoothly on the guitar. Llobet is not fully appreciated as the colossal figure in the guitar world as he should be.

El Noy de la Mare (Llobet, Miguel)
El Noi de la Mare is a Catalan folk song, both a lullaby and a Christmas song. It is one of Miguel Llobet's best known arrangements of Catalan folk songs. Although in principle a simple piece, El Noi de la Mare features some difficult left hand fingering, causing me to rate it of medium difficulty. Even famous professional guitar players will simplify some of the fingerings by omitting or replacing notes. I recommend you avoid such shortcuts. If you persevere to the point you can play the one or two hard parts at tempo, you will find your overall playing has improved. The arrangement uses a dropped-D tuning and consists of three voices.
